Job Description

 

 

The Lovett School, a coeducational college preparatory school serving students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 in Atlanta, GA, seeks a Director of Plant Operations. This is a 12-month position. 

 

Position Summary:  This position is responsible for the direction and oversight of all school facility services, including interior and exterior physical plant ongoing and preventative maintenance, renovations, construction, transportation, special projects, and housekeeping.  In addition, this position will ensure that physical plant safety training and energy management systems operations are in place.  The Director of Plant Operations shall develop efficient work processes and provide strategic leadership and coordination across a facility team consisting of mechanics, HVAC, technician, landscapers, custodians, outside vendors, and administrators.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Oversees a staff of approximately 50 employees working in teams:  maintenance, grounds, housekeeping, and transportation.
  • Develops work practices that efficiently utilize team members and department resources in support of school events and daily tasks.
  • Provides consistent and constructive performance feedback and clearly defined job expectations.
  • Ensures compliance with all required safety, environmental, and employment regulations.
  • Provides input regarding annual facilities operations and capital budgets.
  • In conjunction with Human Resources, owns overall hiring process for all team positions.

 

Facilities:

  • Examines facilities on a regular basis to determine safe operation and needed maintenance and repairs.
  • Optimizes school’s HVAC, energy management, fire, and life safety systems.
  • Oversees building operational systems and related compliance requirements.
  • Hires and manages independent contractors and vendors, including contract negotiation.
  • Utilizes School Dude to manage campus facilities preventative maintenance and service requests.
  • Provides a quality customer service-oriented maintenance experience for on-campus and off-campus constituencies.
  • Manages capital repair and preventative maintenance projects by communicating project plans, setting expectations, and monitoring progress and results.

 

 

Strategic Planning:

  • Serves, supports, and engages the Board of Trustees Buildings and Grounds Committee.
  • Serves, supports, and engages the Sustainability Committee
  • Works with school leadership in the planning and coordination of capital projects and campus master planning.
  • Participates in special projects.

 

 

Position Requirements (knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform satisfactorily in the position):

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a similar field with seven to ten years relevant experience
  • Proven leadership and management skills with the exceptional ability to manage third party vendors and contractors
  • Possesses a high degree of computer literacy sufficient to prepare advanced reports in Excel and Word, utilize MS Project; budget and prepare presentations, operate BAS (building automation system) and CMMS work order system, and access control and camera systems and building automation and energy management systems
  • Specific experience with boiler and chiller plant operations, maintenance, compliance and controls (specifically TRANE Summit system) highly preferable
  • Strong communication skills with confidence in conveying appropriate information throughout the community as needed
  • Demonstrated self-starter with the ability to demonstrate initiative/innovation, ability to develop alternative solutions/approaches, and continually be resourceful
  • Possesses strong attention to detail as well as organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Has a commitment to the institution’s needs with readiness to respond 24/7/365 as reasonably necessary
