Reports to: President and CEO, Westside Future Fund

The Westside Future Fund, Inc. (“WFF”), a not-for-profit organization, was founded by leading Atlanta corporations, city government and other local organizations to revitalize the Westside neighborhoods of English Avenue, Vine City, Ashview Heights and the Atlanta University Center.  Our vision is to create “A community Dr. Martin Luther King would be proud to call home.”

The Opportunity:

The Director of Neighborhood Engagement and Planning will join the Westside Future Fund to encourage future development to follow the vision set forth in the Westside Land Use Framework Plan () and to lead the organization’s green infrastructure and historic preservation efforts. The position will strengthen the organization’s mission to advance a compassionate approach to neighborhood revitalization that creates a diverse, mixed income community; improves the quality of life for current and future residents; and elevates the Historic Westside’s history and culture.


The Director will (1) coordinate with public and private partners on the implementation of the Westside Land Use Framework Plan; (2) manage an update to the Westside’s zoning classifications and the future development of design guidelines and historic districts; (3) assist the development community in design review and permitting for projects in partnership with the City of Atlanta; (4) guide organizational policy on green infrastructure, historic preservation, and other innovations in urban design; 5) lead placemaking efforts, such as public art installations or tactical urbanism activities; 6) engage with Westside neighborhood residents to ensure their views are included in future development plans and they are updated on progress; 7) work with developers, builders, and community stakeholders to integrate individual projects into the larger Westside development vision


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assess current land uses and the effectiveness of existing policies and codes to implement the organization’s vision in a dynamic, changing community.
  • Present a creative approach to addressing community challenges in safety, health, education, and building mixed-income communities through design.
  • Implement adopted plans and planning processes; coordinate with neighborhood associations, neighborhood planning units, and City of Atlanta agencies with openness and compassion; and prepare materials for community meetings.
  • Provide guidance to community organizations and developers on specific project proposals through site visits, design review and permitting assistance, and education on local development incentives and regulations.
  • Manage consultants in the development and updating of plans and studies related to land use, historic preservation, green infrastructure, and transportation.  
  • Interpret socioeconomic, geographic, environmental, and historical data and resources.
  • Manage a robust database of pipeline of public infrastructure projects and private development in the Westside.
  • As opportunities arise, coordinate placemaking activities, such as the installation of murals, pocket parks, and tactical urbanism projects, and serve as resource to community organizations implementing their own projects.
  • Apply for grants supporting the organization’s land use and urban design work.
  • Performs other duties of a similar or related level as necessary or assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with a variety of individuals, including the ability to listen to and interpret the needs of individuals outside the planning profession.
  • Report writing and design experience.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and a diverse set of projects and successfully meet deadlines.
  • Maintain a high level of integrity and confidentiality.
  • Strong public speaking skills
  • Compassion for people and experience in working in a diverse community context
  • Knowledge of Atlanta and/or Historic Westside and experience in coordinating with public agencies.
  • Experience with a geospatial tool like ArcGIS.

Education and Experience:

  • 7-10 years of related experience in land use planning, urban design, and/or historic preservation.
  • Working knowledge of real estate development in urban neighborhoods
  • Degree in urban planning, public administration, public policy, architecture, engineering, or related field (Graduate degree preferred, bachelor’s degree considered).
  • American Institute for Certified Planners (AICP) certification preferred but not required.
